The objective of this in vitro study was to determine the antibacterial effect of essential oils: Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel), Cimbopogon citrus (lemon verbena), Origanum vulgare (Oregano), Citrus aurantifolia Swingle (Limón) and sinensis Citrus (Orange) with chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12% on strains of Streptococcus Mutans ATCC 25175 standardized. the essential oils of said plants were obtained by the method of steam stripping water. The five essential oils mentioned was used at a concentration of 100% for microbiological study; in Mueller Hinton agar were used enriched with 5% human blood These oils were compared with a control pattern that was Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.12%. For each type of essential oil was three replications performed on plates of agar Müller Hinton with Kirby Bauer method or disk diffusion method with 10 ul of each essential oil and standard control strains of Streptococcus mutans it was incorporated. For antibacterial effectiveness the diameter of halos the inhibition at 24 hours was measured. The diameters of halos of inhibition for the essential oil of Cimbopogon Citrus (Lemon Verbena) at 100%, was 32. 967 mm in the case of essential oil of Origanum vulgare (Oregano) at 100% was a halo of inhibition 15,889 mm, for the essential oil Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) at 100%was an inhibition of 15 mm, in the essential oil of Citrus Sinesis (Orange) at 100%, was an inhibition of 14 667 mm while for the oil Citrus aurantifolia Swingle (Lemon) at 100% had a halo of inhibition of 9,333 mm. In conducting the study POST HOC ANOVA showed that there are significant differences in the diameters of the inhibition halos, and HSD test of TUKEY was identified that essential oil was the most effective. It is concluded that the essential oils Cimbopogon Citrus (Lemon Verbena), Origanum vulgare (Oregano), Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and Citrus Sinensis (Orange) have greater antibacterial effect on strains of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, while the Citrus essential oil aurantifolia Swingle (Lemon) has no antibacterial effect.
