The purpose of this thesis is to develop and deploy a virtual environment for tutoring and tracking students as part of a larger tutoring system for the Systems Engineering Faculty (EPIS) from the Andina University of Cusco.
Hypothesis: The virtual environment for tutoring and tracking students of the Systems Engineering Faculty from the Andina University of Cusco improves the current tutoring method used at EP-IS.
The study population was composed by the faculty’s teachers from the EP-IS and 2 surveys were taken, the first one (called the PRE questionnaire) had questions related to the tutoring system used in the 2016-I semester by the control group, and the second one (the POST questionnaire) related to the usage by the experimental group in the 2016-II semester.
The results show the virtual environment for student tutoring and tracking (evTM) in accordance with the hypothesis, improved in 45% the tutoring system.
It was concluded that using a virtual environment to help tutoring improves the user interaction between students and teachers regarding to the informational resources management, such tool can also be used in parallel with the current tutoring system to provide other students easy access to study resources and to provide teachers useful features such as appointments and reports with a better accuracy.
On the first chapter the thesis’ problem is proposed and it’s explained the meaning behind it’s proposal, also the main and secondary objectives are explained.
On the second chapter the preliminary studies are shown, describing all of the relevant theoretical aspects, such as the requirements provided by the “Instituto de Calidad y Acreditación de Programas de Computación, Ingeniería y Tecnología” (ICACIT).
On the third chapter the methodology and the kind of research used are explained, also details regarding the study population, the sample, and the data recollection and analysis procedures are explained.
On the fourth chapter the system development model is detailed, which is divided in 4 phases:
the initial phase where the current business processes will be modeled, the requirements and usage cases of the system; the design phase, composed by the database diagrams, hardware-level architecture and the virtual environment software; the building phase, where the design and programming patterns will be explained; and the deployment phase, where the tests will be performed to ensure the correct operation of evTM.
Finally the fifth chapter presents the discussion, conclusions, recommendations and references where the related documents and bibliography are included.
