Approximately 53 geological faults cross the Cusco region (INGEMMET, 2013) that have been
the cause of the main earthquakes that occurred on this region. These seismic events have shown
the vulnerability in which the city houses are found, due to several factors: poor materials
quality, construction without any technical direction, or non-compliance with basic building
regulations.
The APV Cachimayo, is an area that is located near the geological faults of Chincheros,
Qoricocha, Pachatusan, Tambomachay, Urcos and Zurite, which have been inactive for a long
time but could be reactivated at any time. Due to the characteristics of the homes of this APV,
a seismic event could cause severe damage. That is why, in this investigation, it has been
proposed to determine the level of seismic risk to which the APV is exposed. Cachimayo, so
that the pertinent authorities can establish the appropriate management measures for said risk.
For the development of the research, different analysis tools were used to calculate both risk,
vulnerability and seismic hazard. For the analysis of seismic vulnerability, the verification
sheets adapted from the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) were used, which
considers four levels of vulnerability: low, medium, high and very high. For the analysis of
seismic hazard, the R-CRISIS algorithm was used, which was created by Mario Ordaz and the
results obtained are the maximum ground accelerations for different return periods, which can
be related to the hazard levels, which are : low, medium, high and very high danger.
Finally, the seismic risk analysis was evaluated with the seismic risk matrix also prepared by
INDECI, in which the seismic hazard and vulnerability are related. This risk determines the
probability of loss of life and the possibility of economic, social and environmental effects, as
a consequence of the materialization of the hazard and the context, which facilitate the
occurrence of disasters.
The results show a medium level of danger for the study area and a very high level of seismic
vulnerability. When applying the seismic risk matrix, it is determined that the existing risk level
in the APV. Cachimayo is high, which suggests that, when an earthquake occurs, these homes
will have a greater probability of collapse.
